Brendan: We're producing so much. Every time I look, there's another new, updated document.

Pretty amazing the impact of collaborative documents.

Wow, it's official. At the opening keynote, an exceptional young woman (14 years old) set the tone for the Middle Grades Institute. Yes, it's all about students. Empower them and then watch them amaze with their growth and insight. She (and her co-presenter/teacher) was so phenomenal that it was tempting to write her off as one in a million.

But today I witnessed three adolescent students provide a solid hour of analysis and guidance to two veteran teachers. The teachers were thoughtful and keen to listen. And the students delivered wonderfully. It was a transformative experience for me that left me wondering how, after thinking about professional development and instructional practice for more than a decade, I had missed this obvious component.

Yes, it's about the students. So ask them, empower them, and listen closely.

MGI 2015 Tuesday Morning Meeting Dance

At MGI we wear a lot of hats!

Yesterday, I was able to see transferable skills in action! Rachel showed me that she is proficient in the graduation proficiency self direction indicator H. persevering in challenging situations. Rachel went out to her car and noticed that her tire was very flat and was worried that she harm the rim of her car without getting help from AAA. She called AAA and was able to get someone to help her. She then found out that she would have to charge the air compressor. She had never done this before but was able to use a growth mindset and persevered through the challenge of getting air into her tires. Evidence of proficiency is that she was able to carry the heavy compressor across the parking lot before charging it.
